Berlin's quantum technology scene is gaining momentum with the launch of a new Joint Lab focused on integrated nonlinear quantum optics. The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (FBH) and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin) announced their latest collaboration at the beginning of July, marking another strategic step in expanding the city's quantum ecosystem.
The new lab, headed by quantum physicist Dr. Sven Ramelow from HU Berlin, aims to bridge fundamental and application-oriented research in sensor technology using quantum light. According to information from the FBH press release, the partners are combining their expertise in generating and converting quantum light to unlock new possibilities in environmental analysis, medicine, and information processing.
Quantum Light Opens New Possibilities
The technology centers around quantum light – photons that can be manipulated so pairs interact strongly with each other. Using nonlinear crystals, researchers generate entangled photon pairs where one photon behaves exactly like its partner, regardless of location or wavelength.
This breakthrough has practical applications for medical diagnostics. The technology enables high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy in the mid-infrared range, potentially allowing faster cancer diagnosis using more cost-effective near-infrared equipment instead of expensive MIR systems.
Strengthening Quantum Communication
The lab also focuses on quantum communication through highly efficient SPDC (Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion) sources based on aluminum gallium-arsenide waveguides. These generate entangled photon pairs essential for quantum key distribution and sensor technology.
Dr. Ramelow brings impressive credentials to the project, having earned his PhD under Nobel laureate Anton Zeilinger in Vienna and worked at prestigious institutions including the University of Queensland, Cornell University, and Columbia University. He has collaborated with FBH since 2019.
This Joint Lab represents FBH's fifth partnership with HU Berlin and eleventh overall, reinforcing Berlin's position as a leading quantum technology hub.
